In the sentence 私はあなたを愛しているのだと思う, what's the deal with the のだと at the end? I thought the -て form was supposed to be used.

2の is the "explanatory の". Search that term on this site; there's loads of information. と is the quote particle. と思う should be covered in almost any beginners Japanese book/web-site. だ is just the copula. How/why were you expecting to see the て-form used? Can you give an example? – user3856370 Jan 05 '23 at 21:58
