Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou (lahir Marguerite Annie Johnson pada April 4 1928 - meninggal pada 28 Mei 2014) adalah seorang penulis , penyair, dan aktivis hak sivil Amerika Syarikat. Beliau telah menulis beberapa buku dengan penjualan terbaik dan sebagian di antaranya berisi kejadian-kejadian yang pernah dialaminya sendiri;[1] beberapa judul buku yang ditulisnya adalah I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1970), Gather Together in My Name (1974), dan A Song Flung Up to Heaven (2002).[2] Beliau turut pernah seperjuangan orang-orang utama dalam gerakan hak saksama di negara tersebut seperti Martin Luther King, Jr. dan Malcolm X.

Awal hidup

Marguerite Annie Johnson lahir pada 4 April 1928 di St. Louis, Missouri, dari pasangan Bailey Johnson and Vivian Baxter Johnson.[1] Saat kedua orang tuanya bercerai, Maya berserta seorang kakak laki-lakinya dititipkan pada nenek mereka selama beberapa tahun.[2] Pada tahun 1936, Maya diperkosa oleh kekasih ibunya dan lelaki tersebut kemudian dibunuh oleh pamannya.[2] Akibat kematian orang tersebut, Maya menjadi bisu dan sulit berbicara selama lima tahun.[2]

Kerjaya penulisan

Dia adalah wanita Afrika-Amerika pertama yang diminta untuk membacakan puisi karyanya dalam inagurasi presiden Amerika Serikat tahun 1993.[1] Puisi yang dia bacakan di Bill Clinton berjudul "On the Pulse of Morning" dan karya tersebut juga mendapat Penghargaan Grammy (Grammy Awards) pada tahun yang sama.[1]

Selain itu, dia adalah wanita kulit hitam pertama yang menulis skenario dan diproduksi menjadi film, yaitu Georgia, Georgia (1971).[2]
