Biochemist from Siberia has just patented a new super genome formed by amalgamating genome X and genome Y. These genomes are harmless when separate, but when mixed there is a 45% chance of an unwanted side-reaction and a 10% chance of no reaction at all. Calculate the time until the absorbing state given that the chemicals are initially seperate.

The sketch is as follows: image

The time before reaching the absorbing state is also called the mean time to failure (MTTF). This is the “Laplace transform” of the rate of the disaster. I would like to understand this, not to be solved, so please give me only directions where to go.

  • This looks like a question for a homework. If so, you should add the `self-study` tag to your post. – Patrick Coulombe Feb 18 '14 at 11:43
