I am trying to find the association between grades and most and least preferred subjects, wherein it is hypothesized that subject preference is the independent variable to the dependent variable grades. The grades will be treated as ordinal variables (Likert scale) ranging from 4 (100-98) to 1 (89-85). Both the most and least preferred subjects will be answered by respondents. It is assumed that the most preferred subject has a positive correlation with the grades, meaning if you like the subject you should have a higher grade; the least preferred is hypothesized to have a negative correlation with the grades, where if you do not like the subject, you will receive lower grades. What is the most appropriate statistical test to be used here?

Grades
Grades of... 100-98 97-95 94-90 89-85
Most Preferred Subject
Least Preferred Subject

I'm sorry if I can't explain this properly, since I am not used to doing statistical tests and statistics in general.

  • By definition the points will not all be independent if each respondent has multiple entries. This need not be a problem for your analysis; see for example [tag:paired-data] for examples of how such data is analysed. – mkt Jun 01 '21 at 17:06
  • @ReinstateMonica I still cannot find an appropriate test for this ordinal data. I can't really use Wilcoxon Rank Sum since my data set has too few pairs, nor can I use mean and standard deviation since this is ordinal. Do you have any recommendation as to how I could analyze this? Thanks! – Pierrre Jun 02 '21 at 06:38
  • Hard to answer without knowing more about what you are trying to achieve. I suggest editing your question to explain the real question/problem, or posting a new question. – mkt Jun 02 '21 at 06:47
  • I have edited the question, hope it is clearer – Pierrre Jun 02 '21 at 07:10
  • It could use some further elaboration but the basic idea seems clear. But I would also edit the title, which no longer corresponds to the text. – mkt Jun 02 '21 at 07:14
  • But what about know? What statistical test should I use? – Pierrre Jun 02 '21 at 07:52
  • Which is your predictor and which your response? – mkt Jun 02 '21 at 07:54
  • From what I could understand, subject preference is the hypothesized predictor variable, while grades are the response variable. – Pierrre Jun 02 '21 at 08:07
