I have a nested variable situation similar to How do you deal with "nested" variables in a regression model?. I have household data and the nested independent variables are the main parent's working pattern (working from home or at office) and the second parent's working patter. If the second parent is absent, the second parent's variable is 'absent' (in other words it is a single parent family), otherwise the values are 'working from home', 'working at the office'. I think this is a case a nested variables (the interaction between the patterns of the two parents is valid only for two parents families) where I do not need to include the main effects. Can you please confirm? Thank you, Nic
