An on-demand Internet media streaming and flat rate DVD-by-mail provider based in the United States.
Netflix was started in 1997 by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings as a DVD-by-mail provider in the United States. By 2009, it had over 10 million subscribers and over 100,000 DVD titles. In October of 2008, Netflix started streaming videos via the Internet.
Netflix has two sections of their company: Internet video streaming and DVD rentals.
Internet video streaming
Netflix streams much of their content to supported computers and devices. Streaming requires Microsoft Silverlight to stream content.
DVD rentals
Netflix offers DVD rentals by mail in the United States only. Customers are charged a flat rate fee for renting DVDs. Customers can keep the rented DVD for as long as they want, but there is a limit to the number of DVDs a customer can have at one time.
