Native Screenshots ( >= Android 4.0)

Screenshots were not native in Android until version 4.0.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). In this version, users can hold down the Power button and select Screenshot to capture an image of their display.

Before Ice Cream Sandwich

Many people went to many lengths to capture screenshots on devices before 4.0. Cyanogenmod 7 gave this option in the same manner Android 4.0 does, but like many screenshot options, requires a rooted device. There do exist some apps that claim to be able to take them without root access, but most only work on certain devices.

I realize in order to capture screenshots of my phone, all screenshot applications require I have a rooted phone. Why is this so? Why can't we have a simple screenshot application for Android, just like we have for Windows?
